What is God’s Name?
October 28, 2024
We loaded this study link under “Doctrinal Studies” because we do not believe folks will be either saved or lost because they used the correct name, as seen in the ancient Hebrew texts. We do however, believe it is a matter of respect to use the name as given to Moses, and we now have the vowel points to know conclusively how the name was pronounced.
Awhile back, we had a kid doing occasional yard work for us until he graduated school. His name was “George.” But he pronounced it Hor-hey, because he was of Mexican ancestry. I never once used the American pronunciation. That would have been disrespectful. I don’t call “Juan,” by John. I don’t call “Miguel” by Michael, or “Jesus” by Gee-sus, the English pronunciation.
The teacher at the following link does a good job highlighting the manuscripts, explaining the vowel points, and even shows pictures of very old coins with the name of Yehovah, with the vowel points. He also explains why Rabbinic Jews stopped speaking the name. The teaching starts a bit slow, but stick with him. I am not familiar with everything taught at his website, so don’t hold me to that. I just thought he did a good job with this teaching.

Another teacher I recommend for this topic of God’s name, is Nehemia Gordon, at nehemiaswall.com. Gordon earned his PhD from Bar-Ilan University in Biblical Studies, writing his doctoral dissertation on the "The Writing, Erasure, and Correction of the Tetragrammaton in Medieval Hebrew Bible Manuscripts." He has worked as a translator on the Dead Sea Scrolls and a researcher deciphering ancient Hebrew manuscripts. Gordon is currently working on cutting edge research utilizing Hebrew manuscripts of the Bible. Once again, I do not agree with Dr Gordon in all matters of doctrine. I am only pointing to his work on the name of the God of the Bible.
